The seven-day rule

Most blossoms are at their best for about a week. Travel with a five-to-ten day cherry-focused itinerary and you'll usually catch peak in at least one city, even if the bloom shifts by a few days.

Don't skip the smaller spots

Everyone goes to Ueno Park and the Philosopher's Path. The best photos we've ever taken were in Yoshino, Hirosaki and along the Meguro river in Tokyo — same trees, fewer crowds.
