Cold-weather travel is a kit problem more than a temperature problem. If you have the right layers you'll be comfortable at minus 20°C. If you don't, even a mild Arctic night will feel miserable.

The three-layer rule

Base layer (merino, not cotton). Mid layer (fleece or down). Outer layer (windproof, waterproof shell). Add or remove layers depending on activity. Walking briskly? You'll overheat in three layers. Standing still chasing the aurora? You'll wish you'd packed four.

Don't forget your hands

The single biggest mistake we see: thin photographer's gloves and no over-mitts. Bring both. You'll thank us at midnight.
